THE STORY

About this wine

Artadi keeps this one accessible — a juicy, medium-bodied village red from Laguardia and Elvillar de Álava, sour cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate over violet and spice, powdery tannins into a long finish.

Artadi Viñas de Gaín Tinto is the estate’s accessible village-blend red, made from vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar de Álava. Although produced in Rioja Alavesa, Artadi’s wines are presented outside the Rioja DOCa appellation framework as Vino de España; the 2022 was made from a dry, very warm vintage, with picking beginning on 15 September. Approximately 45,000 bottles were produced and the wine was bottled in June 2023.

Worth knowing

Plots once bottled separately in the collector's range went into the 2022, and the estate frames that as a new expression of Pagos Viejos. For a red, it also carries a small white-grape component — around 2 to 4 percent Viura.

Blend

  • Tempranillo
  • Viura

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Artadi Viñas de Gain (Rioja) 2022

Tasting

Color: Deep cherry red shades into ruby, and the reflections stay the same cherry colour.
Nose: Red fruit and sour cherry arrive first, with mulberry, pomegranate and wild strawberry close behind and violet lifting the whole thing. Underneath sit herbs, liquorice, spice, dark chocolate and scented, toasted oak.
Palate: It's voluminous for a medium body and finely textured. Ripe forest fruit rides lively acidity, with powdery, caressing tannins underneath, and the finish runs long and spicy.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with grilled lamb with woody herbs
A must try with roasted peppers and tomato-based rice dishes
A must try with cured pork and young sheep's milk cheese
