THE STORY

About this wine

Dry, full-bodied Gran Reserva Rioja from selected old Tempranillo and Graciano vineyards — roughly 27 to 28 months in French oak, at least 36 more in bottle before release. Intense cherry-red with garnet edges, ripe fruit, nutmeg, clove, tobacco and cedar on the nose, and licorice, cocoa, plum and blackcurrant over juicy acidity and firm, sweet tannins into a long, spicy finish.

Beronia Gran Reserva 2018 is a Rioja red made from selected grapes from old Tempranillo and Graciano vineyards. The official 2018 technical information describes a cold, wet growing season with delayed ripening, selective harvesting in late September, and a vintage rating of “Good.” It was aged for approximately 27–28 months in French oak and at least 36 months in bottle before release. The official sources differ slightly on the blend: the Beronia 2018 product page states 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano, while the 2018 technical sheet states 94% and 6%, respectively.

Worth knowing

The 2018 was a late vintage in Rioja: a cold, wet winter and spring delayed bud break and pushed ripening back 15 to 20 days, and it took a sunnier, drier August plus selective picking into late September to bring the fruit to a satisfactory point. The finished wine measures 14.0% alcohol, 6.40 g/L total acidity, 1.8 g/L residual sugar and a pH of 3.60.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva 2018

Tasting

Color: Intense cherry-red in the glass, garnet at the edges, the color deepening to garnet at the core.
Nose: Ripe, compote-style fruit sets the tone, nutmeg and clove right behind, then pipe tobacco, cedar, nuts, a balsamic streak and sweet damp earth, with a mineral, spicy undertone running underneath.
Palate: Ripe and layered from the start — licorice, cocoa, plum and blackcurrant at the core, graphite and spice threaded through. The middle goes plush on firm, sweet, well-structured tannins, with juicy acidity keeping the fruit lively.
