THE STORY

About this wine

Dry, medium-bodied Oregon Pinot Noir from 100% estate-grown fruit in the Eola-Amity Hills — dark cherry and blackberry up front, fir tips and sea salt over forest floor and mineral, vibrant acidity, fine chalky tannins, a long savory finish.

Bethel Heights' 2023 Estate Pinot Noir is made from 100% estate-grown fruit across the Bethel Heights, Justice, and Lewman vineyards. The producer describes it as its broadest estate expression and an annual benchmark for the vintage and winemaking approach. The 2023 growing season began cool, turned unusually warm in May, and finished with September rain that helped preserve balance. The wine was certified organically grown, hand-sorted and destemmed, fermented after a four-day cold soak, and aged 10 months on lees in French oak, 30% new.

Worth knowing

Nearly 175 barrels go into the estate blend, and it went to bottle unfined. Justice Vineyard leads the fruit at 50%, Bethel Heights Vineyard at 30%, Lewman Vineyard at 20% — 3,856 750-ml cases plus 544 cases of 375-ml bottles.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Estate 2023

Tasting

Color: Garnet that shimmers, with a neon-pink rim at the edge. Medium ruby-magenta in the glass.
Nose: Fir tips, sea salt, and dark fruit up front — red currant, dark cherry, rhubarb, and blackberry behind them, with lavender, black tea, forest herbs, and spice emerging underneath.
Palate: Medium-bodied and fresh. Concentrated, floral berry fruit sits over turned earth and mineral nuance, with vibrant acidity and fine, chalky-silky tannins carrying it through a long, savory, lightly grippy finish that ends on a touch of licorice.
