THE STORY

About this wine

Ninety-seven percent Tempranillo with three percent Garnacha behind it — native yeasts, fiberglass fermentation, a short vat rest and no barrel aging, bottled unfiltered. A young, unoaked Rioja from a small family estate near Haro, fresh and juicy and medium-bodied, with ripe raspberry and plum, liquorice and spice, gentle tannins, and a clean, lightly saline finish at 13.0% ABV.

Bodega Akutain is a small family-owned estate founded by Juan José Peñagarikano Akutain in the mid-1970s, located near Haro in Rioja Alta. The winery follows a château-style model, using grapes from its own vineyards around the winery and producing limited quantities in an artisanal manner. The 2023 Cosecha is the estate’s young, fruit-forward red: fermented with native yeasts in fiberglass and raised briefly in fiberglass, rather than barrel-aged.

Worth knowing

Everything Akutain makes comes from estate fruit. The winery keeps an underground cave cellar tied to its traditional Rioja production, and the Cosecha itself goes into bottle unfiltered, straight after its tank maturation.

Blend

  • Tempranillo 97%

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Bodega Akutain 'Cosecha' Rioja 2023

Tasting

Color: Ruby in the glass, bright and unmistakably young.
Nose: Youthful and expressive straight out of the glass: ripe raspberry and plum lead, a high-toned red-berry lift right behind them. Liquorice comes up next, then a touch of cinnamon, bay leaf, and a quiet background spice beneath the fruit.
Palate: Fresh, juicy and fruit-driven up front, medium-bodied but light and airy through the middle. Bright acidity keeps it moving, the tannins stay gentle, and the finish comes in clean and lightly saline.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with Tomato-based tapas and Spanish small plates
A must try with Grilled lamb and other simply grilled red meats
A must try with Cured meats and mild charcuterie
