TASTING PROFILE

Black Pepper Blackberry Mineral Tobacco Violet

Not the big, dense Syrah you might expect from the northern Rhône. Pour it with sausages and lentils — focused and mineral, all pepper and violet.

THE STORY

About this wine

Dark, aromatic northern Rhône Syrah from the cold Malleval climat, made entirely from Sérine, an ancient local form of the grape — blackberry and wild strawberry with peppercorn, violet and tobacco, focused and medium-bodied, a long mineral finish.

Château de Saint Cosme’s Saint-Joseph is a négociant bottling, labeled simply “Saint Cosme” to distinguish it from the estate-grown Gigondas wines. The 2023 comes from the northern Rhône appellation’s Malleval climat; the cuvée’s first vintage was 2002 and production is listed at 9,000 bottles.

Worth knowing

Sérine, the ancient, low-yielding local form of Syrah, is the whole cuvée. Château de Saint Cosme brings its own deep history to the bottle — the Barruol family has held the property since 1490, and the site carries Roman winemaking history, including Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Château de Saint Cosme Saint-Joseph 2023

Tasting

Color: Dark red, deepening to inky violet.
Nose: Blackberry and wild strawberry lead, then peppercorn, tobacco, peony and violet, with smoky, mineral accents underneath.
Palate: Focused and medium- to full-bodied. Dark and red berry fruit layers over pepper, tobacco and granite, fine polished tannins and fresh acidity holding it together, and the finish is persistent and mineral.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with Pepper-crusted grilled lamb, chops or leg
A must try with Smoky grilled red meats and sausages
A must try with Cured charcuterie, terrines and aged hams
