TASTING PROFILE

Black Pepper Blackcurrant Toasted Oak

A slow Sunday, a roast duck in the oven. The 2021 is tight and discreet at this early stage, so decant it or give it time — mouth-filling, energetic.

THE STORY

About this wine

100% Gamay from the estate's organically and biodynamically farmed Moulin-à-Vent parcels — a powerful, structured cru red with fine-grained tannins, freshness, and restrained oak complexity, from a small, frost-affected 2021 crop.

Château des Bachelards is an estate in Fleurie, Beaujolais, founded around 1100 by Benedictine monks of Cluny. It farms without synthetic chemicals and is certified organic and biodynamic; the estate’s holdings include parcels in Moulin-à-Vent. The 2021 vintage was challenging in Beaujolais, with frost and a rainy season contributing to very low yields of approximately 20–25 hl/ha.

Worth knowing

Black granite, feldspar, and schist in an unusually complex mix under the estate's Moulin-à-Vent parcels — and a château whose history runs to Cluniac monks around the year 1100. The 2021 went into bottle in March 2023.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Château des Bachelards Moulin-à-Vent 2021

Tasting

Color: Red in the glass.
Nose: Complex, and tight at first — black pepper and liquorice lead, then blackcurrant, with a subtle woody note sitting underneath.
Palate: Ample and relatively full-bodied, running on overt energy, the flavors clean and juicy. Fine, velvety tannins frame the fruit and carry it into a finish that's precise, pure, and pretty.

A must try with grilled red meat
A must try with black pepper-seasoned dishes
