THE STORY

About this wine

Dry Premier Cru white Burgundy from the Clos de la Pucelle monopole — 100% old-vine Chardonnay at 13.5% alcohol. The 2023 stacks lime, green apple, white peach, and mandarin over flowers, chalk, flint, and a light touch of oak: dense but not heavy, taut and fresh, saline, very long.

Domaine Jean Chartron was founded in Puligny-Montrachet in 1859 and is now managed by the fifth generation, Jean-Michel Chartron and Anne-Laure Chartron Malassagne. The estate farms nearly 14 hectares and has practiced organic viticulture since 2014. The 2023 vintage is a white Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune, made from the domaine's Clos de la Pucelle monopole.

Worth knowing

The Chartrons bought this clos in 1917 and replanted it in 1948 — one family, more than a century, with part of the parcel replanted since by clones and massal selection. The 2023 comes from the old vines at the north end, a monopole of roughly 1.02 to 1.16 hectares.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Domaine Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle 2023

Tasting

Color: Pale lemon-yellow in the glass.
Nose: Lime, mandarin, and passion fruit come first, with green apple, Granny Smith, and white peach underneath. Orange blossom, honeysuckle, and acacia open behind them, and the vanillin oak stays in the background.
Palate: Dense yet fresh, and full-bodied — crisp acidity carries it, with the white fruit held firmly in check. The minerality runs flinty and saline, the focus is precise, and real grip holds through a very long, persistent finish.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with Raw and simply cooked shellfish — oysters, langoustines, crab
A must try with Seared scallops or sole in brown butter
A must try with Roast chicken or veal with a cream and wild-mushroom sauce
