THE STORY

About this wine

Honeyed and rich, a botrytized late-harvest dessert wine from Far Niente — Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc off the estate's Dolce Vineyard in Coombsville, made the Sauternes way. Dried apricot, orange rind, pear and tropical fruit ride a mouth-coating texture into a long, persistent finish, acidity holding the line.

2021 vintage late-harvest dessert wine from Far Niente, produced from fruit grown in the producer’s own Dolce Vineyard in Coombsville, Napa Valley. The wine is made in a Sauternes-like style from botrytized grapes and is produced only in small, nature-dependent quantities.

Worth knowing

Patience is the method here. The picking runs berry by berry, each grape coming off only when it reaches the botrytized maturity this wine is built on, and the 2021 fruit came in at 35.3% Brix. The vineyard sits in Coombsville at the foot of the Vaca Mountains east of Napa, and the fog that comes off the Bay is part of why the site works.

Blend

  • Sémillon
  • Sauvignon Blanc

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Far Niente Dolce Napa Valley Late Harvest 2021

Tasting

Color: Golden amber in the glass, the color of a wine that isn't hiding its sweetness.
Nose: Honeyed botrytis runs the nose from the start. Dried apricot and orange rind sit over waxy, lightly gamey fruit, all of it reading Sauternes, with vanilla and coconut arriving behind to lift it.
Palate: Rich, sweet and layered, with acidity doing the balancing work. Vanilla and coconut carry over from the nose, then dried apricot, pear and tropical fruit move through, with mineral and earthy accents and a savory undertone beneath the sweetness.
