TASTING PROFILE

Mineral Red Cherry Violet

Not tonight's bottle. Grainy tannins need years before the velvet comes forward, so give it until the 2030s and pour it with duck breast — stony, seductive.

THE STORY

About this wine

Tannic, structured, seductive anyway: a Pinot Noir Premier Cru from 53-year-old and 80-plus-year-old vines on the white, chalky marl of Clos des Chênes. The 2023 is medium-deep ruby with pure red fruit and a serious mineral edge, finishing long and crisp, austere in its youth and built for the cellar. This release is a 1500 ml magnum.

Domaine François Buffet is a long-established Volnay family domaine with a history dating to 1692. Marc-Olivier Buffet took over from his father after the 2004 vintage; the family farms about 8 hectares across 16 bottlings, and the vineyards are in organic conversion. Fermentation uses indigenous yeast, with gentle extraction and cask élevage using a maximum of 20–25% new wood.

Worth knowing

Clos des Chênes is named for an ancient species of oak that disappeared several centuries ago. The domaine's two parcels here hold vines over 80 years old alongside 53-year-old vines on very white, chalky marl, and the wine ages for 18 months in oak barrels.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 2023 Magnum

Tasting

Color: Medium-deep ruby red in the glass.
Nose: Not giving much yet. Pure red fruit leads, with a discrete floral note behind it and a serious mineral edge underneath — the red fruit keeps gaining intensity in the glass.
Palate: Medium-bodied and poised. Grainy tannins and a gentle grip hold the pure red fruit in place, crisp tangy acidity keeps it fresh, and a stony mineral line runs the length of the wine into a long finish.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with Roast duck breast
A must try with Coq au vin (chicken braised in red wine)
A must try with Roast prime rib
