TASTING PROFILE

Mineral Red Cherry Violet

Not tonight's bottle. This young Volnay premier cru is firm and holding its fruit back, so lay it down and come back with roast duck — austere, stony, perfume to come.

THE STORY

About this wine

100% Pinot Noir from the Clos des Chênes climat, a Volnay 1er Cru in a serious, reserved phase right now. Dry and racy, restrained red fruit and a discreet floral note over chalky minerality and grainy tannins, into a long, crisp finish — built to improve with cellaring.

Domaine François Buffet is a long-established Volnay family domaine whose history dates to 1692. Marc-Olivier Buffet has managed the estate since taking over after the 2004 vintage. The domaine farms about 8 hectares, uses organic-conversion practices and cover crops, and ferments with indigenous yeast; its premier crus are typically made with an average of one-third whole clusters and restrained new oak.

Worth knowing

The domaine's piece of Clos des Chênes is two plots: one parcel of vines more than 80 years old, the other 53-year-old vines. The climat takes its name from an ancient species of oak that disappeared centuries ago, and the word outlived the trees.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Francois Buffet Volnay Clos des Chenes 2023

Tasting

Color: Medium-deep ruby in the glass.
Nose: Austere and shut down at this stage, not giving much yet. A pronounced mineral, stony edge stands up front, pure red fruit behind a discreet floral note — and the fruit builds with time in the glass.
Palate: Medium-bodied and racy, pure red fruit doing the carrying. Grainy tannins and a gentle grip hold the frame, chalky minerality runs through the middle, and the finish is crisp, tangy and long.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with roast duck or game bird with crisp skin
A must try with wild mushroom risotto or an earthy vegetable ragout
A must try with simply roasted lamb, rested and sliced
