THE STORY

About this wine

Deep garnet, dry, rich, and full-bodied at 15% alcohol — 100% Cabernet Franc from the Holden Manz estate in Franschhoek, South Africa, with mulberry and blackberry aromatics, a savory palate built on cassis, polished tannins, and a long finish of mineral, spice, and mocha.

Holden Manz is a family-owned wine estate in the southern part of the Franschhoek Valley, between the Franschhoek River and Stony Brook at approximately 300 metres elevation. The 22-hectare estate has 16 hectares under vines and focuses exclusively on red grapes. The 2020 Cabernet Franc Reserve came from a cooler, windy 2019/20 growing season that produced smaller, intensely flavored berries.

Worth knowing

Small by any measure — the entire 2020 release ran to 2,450 750 ml bottles and 121 magnums, all of it barrel-fermented with wild yeast in French oak, 80% of it new, and bottled on 13 July 2022.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Holden Manz Cabernet Franc Reserve 2020

Tasting

Color: Deep garnet at the center, a bright red edge at the rim.
Nose: Mulberry and blackberry lead, then raspberry leaf, lavender, tarragon, and spice, with red fruit, tobacco leaf, and something floral emerging underneath.
Palate: Rich with volume, and elegant with it — cassis and dark berries up front, red fruit behind, savory flavors holding the middle. The oak stays integrated, the tannins sit supple and polished, and the finish runs long on mineral, spice, and mocha.
