THE STORY

About this wine

The 2023 is all Pinot Noir, a Premier Cru from a walled monopole of roughly one hectare in Rully — organic, hand-harvested, a year in barrel with just 10% new. Ripe red and dark fruit carries spice and freshness on a juicy, medium-bodied palate, elegant tannins running into a long, firm, grippy finish.

Jaeger-Defaix is the Rully domaine of Hélène Jaeger-Defaix and her husband Didier Defaix. The estate has farmed organically since 2009, harvests by hand, and manages Premier Cru vineyards in Rully. The 2023 vintage was harvested in Rully beginning September 7; the domaine describes the year's reds as very fruity, quaffable and fine.

Worth knowing

A premier cru for a backyard. Clos du Chapitre sits directly behind the family house, a stone-walled monopole of roughly one hectare inside the Rully 1er Cru Chapitre appellation, its yields held down by severe pruning, disbudding, green harvesting, and rigorous manual sorting.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Jaeger-Defaix Rully Clos du Chapitre 2023

Tasting

Color: Red
Nose: Ripe red and dark fruit leads off — red berries, blackcurrant liqueur, then poached plum and kirsch. Violets and fine spice lift it, mulberries and boysenberries follow, and earth and pepper sit underneath.
Palate: Concentrated yet juicy, medium-bodied, with good volume and richness. Fine, filmy tannins give it elegant structure, freshness carries through, and the finish is long, firm, and grippy — verging on chewy.
