TASTING PROFILE

Blackberry Blackcurrant Cedar Garrigue Graphite

A thick, well-marbled ribeye, and an evening with nowhere to be. Decant it young or give it four to six years in the cellar — dark, dusty, built to age.

THE STORY

About this wine

Powerful, deeply concentrated Howell Mountain red blend led by 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot behind it. Dark currant, cassis and blackberry ride over graphite, cedar and scorched earth. The palate is full-bodied and silky under firm, dusty tannins, finishing long and structured.

La Jota Vineyard Co. is a historic Howell Mountain property whose stone winery was built in 1898; it is now part of Jackson Family Wines. The 2021 wine was made by Chris Carpenter from fruit grown on the 8-hectare La Jota Vineyard and the 24-hectare W.S. Keyes Estate Vineyard. The vintage had yields down approximately 30–35%, contributing to the wine’s concentration. Production was 3,051 cases. Winemaking included optical sorting, native-yeast fermentation, hand pump-overs, barrel malolactic fermentation, and 22 months in 75% new French oak.

Worth knowing

The history is physical: a stone winery from 1898 that still stands. Two years on, in 1900, La Jota's wines and those of nearby pioneer Fredrick Hess took medals at the Paris Exposition — early international recognition for this Howell Mountain property.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE La Jota Vineyard Co. Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2021

Tasting

Color: Deep garnet-purple in the glass.
Nose: Dark currant, blackcurrant and cassis lead, with blackberry, plum, black cherry and blueberry close behind.
Palate: Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with fresh acidity carrying it forward. The mid-palate is weighty yet silky, the mountain tannins firm, ripe, grainy and dusty, ironstone minerality running under the dark fruit, and the finish comes long and structured.
