THE STORY

About this wine

A 100% Susumaniello from Salento, in southern Puglia — richly aromatic, with dark and red fruit led by cherry, blackberry, and plum, black pepper and tobacco over subtle French oak. Warm, round, and full-bodied but fresh and savory, finishing on fine tannins and persistent wild-berry fruit.

Masseria Li Veli is an Apulian estate acquired and renovated by the Falvo family in 1999. The Askos range is dedicated to researching and valorizing native grape varieties of Puglia; its name refers to an askos, a Greek decanter dating to the 1st century B.C.

Worth knowing

Susumaniello is a rare native grape of Salento that rarely gets bottled as a varietal wine. Grapes like this are why Askos exists — the project was built to preserve and showcase Puglia's native varieties.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Li Veli Susumaniello 2023

Tasting

Color: Deep ruby red, clear all the way through.
Nose: Rich and floral up front — macerated red flowers over morello cherry, blackberry, and sour-cherry jam. Dark spice and black pepper come with tobacco and a balsamic edge, then licorice and cocoa behind the fruit, with a faint lift of incense.
Palate: Full-bodied but never heavy — warm, round, and articulate, with freshness and a savory mineral verve carrying the generous dark and red fruit.
