THE STORY

About this wine

A rich, full-bodied, dry Amarone della Valpolicella Classico from San Pietro in Cariano — dark ruby in the glass, ripe plum, dried fruit, and jam with cinnamon and leather behind, dark cherry, cocoa, and liquorice on a powerful, balanced palate, vivid ripe tannins underneath.

Nicolis is a family winery based in San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. The family has farmed there for generations; Angelo Nicolis and his wife Natalia began developing the estate for a wider market in 1951. The winery has 49 hectares of vineyards. For this Amarone, grapes are hand-harvested, dried for three months in a fruttaio, fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts for 25 days in stainless steel, then aged 30 months in Slavonian oak and six months in bottle.

Worth knowing

Nothing about this wine happens fast. Traditional Amarone appassimento: the bunches dry three months in a dedicated fruttaio before winter fermentation on indigenous yeasts, then wait another 36 months across oak and bottle before release.

Blend

  • Corvina 65%
  • Rondinella 20%
  • Croatina 10%
  • Molinara 5%

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Nicolis Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2020

Tasting

Color: Deep, dark ruby in the glass.
Nose: Concentrated and layered — ripe plum, dried fruit, and jam up front, Rumtopf behind, then cinnamon, underbrush, walnut husk, and leather underneath.
Palate: Powerful and rich but balanced. Dark cherry, cocoa, and liquorice move through the middle, vivid ripe tannins and integrated acidity hold everything up, and the finish runs long, spicy, and savory.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with Savory red meats and game
A must try with Rich beef or venison stews with dark mushrooms
A must try with Long-aged cheeses
