Occidental Running Fence Vineyard Cuvée Catherine Pinot Noir 2023

Occidental Running Fence Vineyard Cuvée Catherine Pinot Noir 2023

TASTING PROFILE

Cherry Citrus Mineral Raspberry Violet

Seared salmon, an evening worth slowing down for. The 2023 is young and reductive at first pour, so give it a short decant — red fruit, savory detail.

THE STORY

About this wine

A single-vineyard 2023 Pinot Noir from Occidental's Running Fence, planted on the West Sonoma Coast in 2012 in fractured sandstone and Goldridge sandy loam over marine sediment. Marine-influenced and cool-climate: red and black fruit, violets, blood-orange peel, and a finish that lands saline and savory.

2023 single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Occidental’s Running Fence Vineyard, sourced from the first 14-acre parcel planted by the Kistlers in 2012. The vineyard is on Occidental’s Bodega Ridge property overlooking the Pacific, with fractured sandstone / Goldridge sandy-loam soils over marine sediment. Occidental first produced this bottling in 2016. The 2023 is described as a cold-year wine with an ethereal, lifted profile.

Worth knowing

The coastal climate here is marginal enough that rootstock choice matters — Occidental went with Riparia Gloire, chosen for its short vegetative cycle and early ripening. The grapes come in by hand at night, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Occidental Running Fence Vineyard Cuvée Catherine Pinot Noir 2023

Tasting

Color: Red in the glass.
Nose: Red and black fruit up front, with violets and blood-orange peel behind. The darker register sits underneath — cranberry, pomegranate, lavender, menthol, licorice — and given time in the glass, tea leaves, woodsmoke, and saline come forward.
Palate: Medium-bodied and tensile, all energy. Electric red berry and dark fruit play against briny, savory, mineral notes.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with seared duck breast with a red-fruit jus
A must try with simply roasted salmon
A must try with wild mushroom risotto
