THE STORY

About this wine

Single-vineyard Barbaresco from Neive, in the Langhe—100% Nebbiolo on marly limestone, floral and earthy at once in 2022, blue flowers and violet over underbrush and iron, tart red fruit, high acidity, firm tannins, a dry finish.

Paitin’s Barbaresco Basarin is a single-vineyard Barbaresco from Neive in Piedmont’s Langhe. Paitin acquired the Basarin vineyard in 2018; the 2022 is therefore among the estate’s early releases from this site. The producer describes Basarin as a historic site associated with Don Cogno, a priest of Neive, and as a vineyard whose wines combine the texture of Barbaresco, the spices of Treiso, and the gravity of Neive.

Worth knowing

Basarin sits inside the commune of Neive yet at a crossroads of the Barbaresco zone—Barbaresco's texture, Treiso's spice, Neive's gravity, all in a single wine. The vineyard's history is tied to Don Cogno, the priest of Neive.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Paitin Barbaresco Basarin 2022

Tasting

Color: Pale ruby in the glass.
Nose: Intense and distinctly floral—blue flowers lead, iris, lilac, and violet behind them, then underbrush, iron, and earthy roots underneath, lifted by spice and balsamic notes.
Palate: Fresh and bright, sharpness over weight. Tart red fruit, cranberry, and black cherry run over crushed granite and white pepper, acidity runs high, the tannins hold firm, and the finish is dry.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with slow-braised beef
A must try with woodland mushroom and truffle dishes
A must try with aged hard cheeses
