Cocoa Dark Cherry Mineral Spice Tar

A bottle for the long Sunday dinner. San Giuliano is old-school Barbaresco that wants a few years, so decant it for a wild-boar ragù — dark cherry, tar, dense tannin.

THE STORY

About this wine

San Giuliano is all Nebbiolo from its namesake cru in Neive, aged 24 months in large Slavonian-oak barrels. Medium- to full-bodied, with dark cherry over walnut, cocoa, tar, and dried flowers, held by dense, compact tannins into a deep mineral finish.

Paolo Manzone is a family-run Piedmont winery founded in 1999 and based at the Meriame cru in Serralunga d’Alba. The estate farms approximately 15 hectares across Serralunga, Sinio, and Roddino and follows an artisanal approach with manual harvesting and slow, traditional vinification.

Worth knowing

San Giuliano dates to 2008 and comes from the estate's own cru vineyard in Neive. Its twenty-four months in 15-hectolitre Slavonian-oak barrels run past Barbaresco's minimum aging requirement — patience the appellation doesn't ask for.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Paolo Manzone Barbaresco 'San Giuliano' 2020

Tasting

Color: Brilliant ruby red in the glass, garnet highlights catching the light.
Nose: Dark cherry and black cherry lead, then walnut, cocoa, and chocolate, with tar, dried flowers, and delicate spice emerging underneath.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, enveloping, and persistent. Dense, compact tannins and lively acidity ride a silky texture into a finish that's deep, long, slightly chewy, and mineral.
