THE STORY

About this wine

Structured and built to age, this Barbaresco DOCG opens quiet, then dark cherry, mulberry, and raspberry come forward over ginger, cinnamon, and tar. All Nebbiolo from the San Giuliano cru in Neive, held up by fresh acidity and firm, gravelly tannins.

Paolo Manzone is a family-run Piedmont estate based in Serralunga d’Alba; the estate has produced Barbaresco from the San Giuliano cru in Neive since 2008. The 2021 Barbaresco is a DOCG wine from a strong, structured vintage. One technical source lists 14.5% ABV rather than 14.0%, so alcohol should be treated as source-dependent.

Worth knowing

The Manzone estate sits in Serralunga d'Alba, but this Barbaresco comes from the San Giuliano cru in the village of Neive. The family has made it from that cru since 2008.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Paolo Manzone Barbaresco 'San Giuliano' 2021

Tasting

Color: Ruby red in the glass.
Nose: Quinine leads, ginger and cinnamon close behind, over tar-edged red mulberry and marasca cherry. Chocolate, tobacco, and red fruit sit underneath.
Palate: Dark and plush from the first sip, raspberry and dark mulberry sitting over dark cherry depth. The gravelly tannins grip without drying, fresh acidity running through, and it finishes on raspberry and bramble.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with slow-braised beef
A must try with aged hard cheese
A must try with wild mushroom risotto
