THE STORY

About this wine

Dry, medium-bodied Barbera from Pio Cesare that leads with its fruit — ripe blackberry, cherry, and plum over violet and spice, the oak kept subtle. The acidity is juicy and pronounced, the tannins soft and velvety, the finish long and polished.

Pio Cesare is a historic, family-owned estate founded in Alba in 1881. The 2024 vintage is notable as the first full growing and production cycle overseen by Federica Boffa Pio, according to the vintage-specific merchant documentation.

Worth knowing

One Barbera, many plots. The fruit comes from family parcels in and around the Barolo and Barbaresco areas, and the differing soils, microclimates, and altitudes across those sites all contribute to the wine's balance, structure, and longevity.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba 2024

Tasting

Color: Deep, intense ruby that takes on garnet nuances as it ages.
Nose: Ripe blackberry and morello cherry lead, plum just behind, with violet and spice running through. Underneath, a subtle herbaceous note and the oak showing as cinnamon, vanilla, blond tobacco, and leather.
Palate: Generous ripe fruit up front, held in balance by pronounced freshness and acidity. The tannins stay moderate and velvety, the finish runs long and polished, and this 2024 folds in sweet cherry, vanilla, chocolate, and smoke.
