THE STORY

About this wine

Cabernet Franc leads this dry Bordeaux-style blend from Stellenbosch at 49 percent, with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot behind it. Intense, complex, approachable — blackberry and bramble over forest floor and dark chocolate, bright acidity, fine velvety tannins, and a dry, lingering finish at 13.5 percent alcohol.

Raats Family Wines was founded in 2000 by Bruwer Raats. The winery is based in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch and focuses particularly on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Jasper Red Blend is named for Bruwer Raats’s late father, Jasper Senior, who served as the winery’s founding viticulturist.

Worth knowing

A father's name on the label. Jasper Senior, Bruwer Raats's late father, was the estate's founding viticulturist, and his love of Cabernet Franc helped shape what Raats grows — the same grape leads this blend at 49 percent.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Raats Red Jasper Bordeaux Blend 2022

Tasting

Color: Red in the glass.
Nose: Blackberry and black cherry come first, bramble and red berries just behind. A lift of rose, then forest floor, dark chocolate, aniseed, spicy tobacco and herbs underneath.
Palate: Medium- to light-bodied and concentrated. Earthy dark fruit carries through the middle, bright acidity and fine-grained, velvety tannins holding it up, fresh mint and cinnamon surfacing along the way, into a finish that's dry and lingering.
