THE STORY

About this wine

Fresh, racy, linear: Roc Breïa's 2024 Chardonnay from Bray, in the northern Mâconnais. Citrus and nectarine run over chalky minerality, the mid-palate goes gently creamy, and a saline lift closes it out at 13.5% abv.

Roc Breïa is Théo Dancer’s project in the Bray district of the Mâconnais, Burgundy. The vineyard project began on a roughly 10-hectare limestone-slope site; the Chardonnay vines were planted in the mid-1940s and mid-1970s. The vineyards are farmed organically, with cover crops and inter-vine cultivation used to restore balance. Winemaking takes place at the Dancers’ Chassagne cellar.

Worth knowing

The label reads Vin de France, not Mâcon-Bray, though the fruit is all from the Mâconnais. That choice buys more freedom over picking dates. The 2024 was whole-bunch pressed, fermented in used 500-litre barrels, bottled unfiltered, with just a small 20 mg/L sulphur addition at bottling.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Roc Breia Macon-Villages Chardonnay 2024

Tasting

Color: White in the glass.
Nose: Citrus and nectarine lead, lemon peel right behind them. Green pear and white flowers come up next, and underneath runs a chalky mineral line.
Palate: Pure, linear, racy — brisk acidity does the driving. The middle is finely textured and gently creamy, and the finish comes in clean, with a subtle saline lift.

Pairs Beautifully With

A must try with Goat cheese and fresh soft cheeses
