Tuesday-night spaghetti al pomodoro. The 2023 is lighter and easy to like, so pour it at 16 to 18°C, a touch cooler in warm weather — juicy, savory, stony.

THE STORY

About this wine

Dry, medium-bodied Chianti Classico — Sangiovese with Colorino and Pugnitello, from San Felice's own vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga, raised in large Slavonian-oak casks. Juicy red cherry, raspberry, and wild cherry, bright acidity, firm tannins, a savory finish with a mineral edge.

San Felice Chianti Classico 2023 is the estate’s standard Chianti Classico DOCG, produced in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena, Tuscany. It is a medium-bodied, estate-bottled red made primarily from native grapes. The wine was fermented on its skins for 8–10 days at 28–30°C, underwent malolactic fermentation in steel, then matured for 10–12 months in large Slavonian-oak casks and a further two months in bottle.

Worth knowing

The interesting part is the arithmetic. Roughly 230,000 bottles of the 2023, and the wine still matured in large Slavonian-oak casks rather than small new barrels — the wood stays subtle, and the fruit leads.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE San Felice Chianti Classico 2023

Tasting

Color: Red in the glass.
Nose: Red and dark berries up front, then dried flowers, crushed herbs, and a stony mineral note. Subtle oak spice and warm spice hold the base, with a suggestion of macerated fruit compote at the back.
Palate: Medium-bodied, fresh, and juicy — red cherry, raspberry, and wild cherry at the core. Bright acidity carries that fruit, while firm, slightly rough tannins give it grip, then polish down with air.
