Blackberry Cassis Cedar Cocoa Violet

Dry-aged ribeye, candles lit, nowhere to be. Expect first maturity around 2028–2031 and decades of development after, so decant it long and pour — dense, spiced, long.

THE STORY

About this wine

Dry, medium- to medium-full-bodied Cabernet from the Spottswoode estate in St. Helena, Napa Valley — 89 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 percent Cabernet Franc, 3 percent Petit Verdot. Fresh blackberry, cassis, and blueberry, firm tannins running fine-grained to silky, bright acidity, a long, spicy, earthy finish.

The 2023 vintage began with a cool growing season and winter rains following several drought years. Delayed budbreak, bloom, and veraison, together with moderate summer conditions, allowed the estate to harvest each block at optimal ripeness from September 9 through October 24. The wine was released to mailing-list members in March 2026, with general release scheduled for September 1, 2026.

Worth knowing

An estate with a long memory. Spottswoode dates to 1882 and has been stewarded by the Novak family since 1972, its 45-acre vineyard farmed organically since 1985 and certified biodynamic and regenerative organic as well.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Tasting

Color: Deep garnet-purple in the glass.
Nose: Fresh blackberry, cassis, and blueberry lead, dark red berry just behind, then anise, cream, and cocoa come up, with violet, black olive, crushed stone, cedar, and new leather emerging underneath.
Palate: Medium-bodied to medium-full, and it moves. Energetic, bright, crunchy black and red fruit, firm tannins that move from fine-grained to silky, lively acidity — the tension between them carries into a long, spicy, earthy finish.

Pairs Beautifully With
