THE STORY

About this wine

Full-bodied, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley — hand-sorted, fermented in barrel on native yeasts, then 18 months in French oak, half of it new. Ripe blackberry and blackcurrant up front, black pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, and roasted coffee behind, firm yet silky tannins underneath, and a finish that runs long. It comes in at 14.0% ABV.

The Calling is a partnership involving sportscaster Jim Nantz, entrepreneur Peter Deutsch, and winemaker James MacPhail. The 2022 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was hand-sorted, gently crushed, fermented with native yeasts in barrel, given extended maceration, and aged 18 months in 100% French oak, including 50% new oak.

Worth knowing

The barrels start early on this one. Fermentation itself runs in barrel on native yeasts, then the wine takes 18 months in 100% French oak, half of it new — which is where the pronounced oak influence starts.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TASTING TIPS OF THE The Calling Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley) 2022

Tasting

Color: Deep cherry red in the glass, shading darker toward plum at its depth.
Nose: Black fruit arrives first, toasted spice close behind, then blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and vanilla rising underneath.
Palate: Ripe blackberry pie and black pepper open it, and vanilla, cinnamon, and roasted coffee build through the middle. The tannins hold firm without giving up their silk, and the finish runs long.
